‘Personal Cinema’ is an exhibition of intimate still life and interior paintings from home. Fruit and veg pulled from the crisper, bowls, cups and cut flowers feature in compositions that are sometimes staged, and sometimes happened upon. 

The paintings are particularly concerned with the interaction of natural light and domestic space. In the morning, sunlight pours into my studio in a bright glare. By 12 o’clock, it streams through my bedroom window and leaves an angular imprint on my pillow. Afternoon bathes the dining room in soft, indirect light. I am interested both in the painterly opportunities and the narrative potential of highlighting these moments, creating compositions that reveal evidence of human presence through a rumpled bedspread or dried paint on a palette, for example.

The title references the personal nature of the subject matter and the cinematic atmosphere of the paintings, using contrasting tones and colours, cropped compositions, and angular lines.
